Apocalipsis Christian School in Bermejo
COCREF: Apocalipsis Christian School is part of an association of Dominican schools called COCREF (Christian Reformed Schools of the Dominican Republic). COCREF consists of 21 schools, 218 employees, and approximately 5,000 students. All COCREF schools charge tuition, and each school's tuition rate is based on the economic situation in the community in which it is located.
School Profile: Bermejo is a batey out in the middle of the sugar cane fields. A batey is a workmens' village which provides company housing for sugar cane cutters. Housing is typically either barrack-style sheds, with each family living in one room of the barrack, or small individual houses made out of pine slats.
Bermejo is not much different from the many other bateys spread out across sugar cane country, but there is one big difference: they have a Christian school! The school was founded in 1993 and met for five years in the church building. There is no public school here, so Apocalipsis Christian School has the opportunity to educate all of the children in this batey, who are primarily the children of Haitian sugar cane cutters.
Apocalipsis' 8th grade graduation in 2007 marked the first ever for a COCREF school. One of the graduates' mothers stood before the entire assembly and spoke of her joy in seeing her son graduate. She never thought this day would be possible in a poor batey like Bermejo, where there was no other educational opportunity. Years earlier she had worked hard to find a way to get her son to the nearest public school, only to be told that he was "too slow" to ever finish school. Yet, on that day in September, her son graduated with honors from the Apocalipsis Christian School in Bermejo!
