The adult literacy rate in Belize is often quoted as high as 76%; however, the last comprehensive survey to be completed in Belize found that the functional literacy rate was approximately 40%. It is apparent that quality education is badly needed, and WWCS believes that the solution to many of these challenges lies in Christ-centered schools.
Western Christian Academy opened its doors on September 2005 under the management of Missionary Dayna, Principle. WCA is now holding 9th and 10th grade classes with over 80 students enrolled. WCA will eventually be a free-standing high school built on 10 acres in the heart of Ontario Village off of the main mission campus.
WWCS HANDS teams have built three new classrooms for the high school, a cafeteria and exterior lunch area, and helped with remodeling of two other classroom structures. We anticipate the need for future HANDS teams over the next two years as the school continues to expand.
This Christian High School is the only option for many of the students in that region who wish to go to an evangelical Christian School. The local public school is too far and too expensive by bus. This school is helping to build the community of Ontario.
