Christian Pre-schools and Boarding Schools

Seven pre-schools located in small villages in Myanmar are in need of improvement and expansion. The pre-schools were established by the Reformed Evangelical Church of Myanmar (RECM) and are the only schooling option for most of these communities. These Christian pre-schools will help give these children and their families a way out of poverty, as well as introduce them to the love of Christ.
"Many of the people in these villages are farmers," says David Sal Thang Vunga, RECM representative. "Most earn no more than one dollar a day. The parents themselves are illiterate and do not usually value education. But in the past few years, a significant number of parents have begun to see the value and importance of educating their children...Though these pre-schools are not being recognized by the government, parents and local authorities in most locations shar eour values and express their appreciation for our efforts."
As a result, David says, pre-schools have been instrumental in church-planting work. The majority of village citizens come from animist or Buddhist backgrounds.
The RECM also desires to establish Christian boarding schools in city centers, in order to reach children beyond pre-school age. "What we want to do is provide students with housing, pastoral nurturing, and educational assistance while the students attend the government-run schools," said David. "This context provides us with a perfect environment to reach out to these students spiritually."
These Christian boarding schools will be the only alternative to Buddhist boarding schools in large city centers of Myanmar.
