Zamar Academy in Chennai

Students: 155 / Teachers: 10 / Grades: Pre-school - 2nd

Zamar Academy has 155 students whose classes take place in rented facilities in a city in southeast India. The children who attend Zamar Academy are from the local slums where there is no access to a good education. In India, these children are trapped within their social class without hope of rising above poverty, mostly because of religious views. Hinduism, the most widely practiced religion in India, teaches that people are born into the social class that they deserve because of their actions in a previous life. Zamar Academy is a Christian institution whose perspective is shaped by the teachings of Jesus, who said, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5). Zamar Academy's vision is to give the kind of education that will lift children out of poverty, giving them hope and self-reliance.
