New Life Mission School in Orissa
Students: 165 / Teachers: 9 / Grades: Pre-school - 5th
The Indian state where New Life Mission School is located is home to 50 million people, of whom only 2% are Christians. The area is one of the most neglected states in India with 30 districts that mainly consist of villages without electricity or safe drinking water. Four million people are homeless and two hundred million are nomads. Most of the people are illiterate and trapped into a cycle of poverty. More earthquakes, destruction, floods, cyclones, corruption and persecution against Christians take place here than in any other state in India.
Adventurous volunteers are needed for HANDS mission teams that will serve as micro-business advisors to New Life Mission School & Orphanage, a WWCS partner school in a rural area of India.
New Life offers Christ-centered education to students who are orphans, along with a growing number of community children from Hindu families. HANDS team volunteers will take care of light construction on the school grounds and assess the opportunities available to New Life for micro-business ventures that will sustain it in this community. Possibilities include growing and mixing ingredients for bio-fuels, raising livestock, and creating handmade goods with readily-available and affordable materials.
A team nurse is essential for HANDS teams to India as the region in which New Life is located is isolated, making efficient travel difficult. The number of days required to complete a HANDS project varies; in the case of New Life the length of the trip would be approximately two weeks.
As a HANDS volunteer at New Life, you will have many opportunities to get to know the students, as most of them live on-site in the orphanage. The couple who run the school have two children of their own and are fully dedicated to discovering new ways to sustain New Life Mission School in this region.
